My name is Laura Townend and the words I would use to describe myself would be: student, sister, explorer, daughter, friend. My interest vary from alternative rock music to photography to calligraphy to travelling.
- I grew up in Northern Ontario in a family of five, my two parents are immigrants from England and I have an older brother (Luke, 25) and an older sister (Carolyn, 22).
- Although I am originally from Northern Ontario, I have lived in Europe (spending most of my time in the UK and Austria) and Southern Ontario and am now currently a student at St. Stephen's University in New Brunswick.
- Much of my interest in International Studies has come from reading non-fiction, historical and travel books. I enjoy reading about the history and impact of colonialism, the ancient Silk Road and about people who trek around the globe. Reading these kinds of stories allows me to peer into a world that is so different than mine and helps me to come to an understanding of why things are the way they are today.
- As I have mentioned before I love to travel. I have only been to two contients, but one of my goals in life is to visit all eight (yes, even Antarctica!). I have seen both poverty (rural Belize) and great wealth (the great cities of North America and Europe) and I am fascinated with the different ways that people live their lives.
- Another interest of mine is music. I really enjoy music that has a message, it has a story, something to say, and for that reason one of my favourite song writers is a man called Jon Foreman (lead singer of a band called Switchfoot, with side projects called Fiction Family and another that bears his name). His lyrics often inspire me to think differently about life, about the struggle and tension between the good in the world and the evil. One song in particular that has really impacted my life is The Shadow Proves the Sunshine. The title alone gives me hope, and the whole song helps me to see the world through a more optimisic lense (I've posted the song under the videos tab).
